From Roman Palace to Cathedral

The history of Trier Cathedral dates back to the 4th century AD. At this site, Empress Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, once had a massive palace church built – larger than any other sacred building north of the Alps.

Over the centuries, the structure has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, expanded and redesigned. This has resulted in a fascinating interplay of different architectural styles: Roman, Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque.

Below the current cathedral still lie the remnants of the original Roman basilica – they can be visited during guided tours and provide a rare insight into early Christianity in the Roman Empire.

The Holy Robe and the Significance of the Cathedral

The cathedral gained particular fame due to the Holy Robe, a relic venerated as the tunic of Christ. According to legend, Empress Helena brought it from the Holy Land to Trier.

It is only displayed publicly on special occasions, most recently during the Holy Robe Pilgrimage – an event that attracts pilgrims from all over the world.
